Free Credit Score: Credit Score 101 Print E-mail

Finding a free credit score is a common request among people today when it is so important for things like getting a credit card, buying a home, renting an apartment, purchasing an insurance policy, and receiving an offer of employment.

Where to Get Free Credit Score?

Every person can get free credit scores from three credit bureaus: Experian (Experian/Fair Isaac Risk Model), Equifax (BEACON), and TransUnion (EMPIRICA). Apart from these, lenders can have their own free credit scores from other credit bureaus or their internal systems.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a person can obtain free credit score and free credit reports from these three bureaus once in a year. All three reports can be ordered at the same time.

You can obtain the free credit score and credit report by visiting the website: www.annualcreditreport.com or by mailing an Annual Credit Report request form to the Annual Credit Report Request Service.

An individual is required to provide his/her name, address, social security number, and date of birth for accessing reports. A free report can also be obtained more than once within the same year in certain circumstances, such as:

  • If a person is on welfare

  • If the report is inaccurate because of fraud

  • If the person is unemployed and is looking for a job

  • If a company takes adverse action against the applicant such as denying an application for credit, insurance, or employment, one can request a report within 60 days.
