Investment can be done in many ways. By learning new skills
or taking new opportunities, you are investing in yourself. By purchasing
better equipment or offering more products and services, you are investing in
small business.
And, equally significant, you can invest money you already
have to meet your financial goals and also save for the future. But keep in
mind that there are no guarantees when you are investing. You should be ready
to be willing to accept the possibility that you won't attain everything you
set out to accomplish.
Investing means buying capital asserts i.e. things of value
with an expectation to:
- Become
a source of extra income
- Become
more valuable over time
- Both
increase in value and provide income
The best reason behind investing is that owning capital
assets can help you meet mid-term and long-term financial goals.
Even if you
plan on earning more income in the future than what you are earning now, most
people can't pay for big expenses such as college tuition or starting a
business out of their everyday earnings. And you are likely to earn less when
you retire.
There are number of asset classes, or investment categories
in the world of investment, each of which puts your money to work a little
differently. Most often, you will hear about the stocks, bonds, and cash
equivalents type of asset classes.
With the help of brokerage account that you establish at
your bank or brokerage firm, you can buy and sell these investments. When you
give an order, usually online or over the phone, your broker carries out your
instructions.
You will pay the broker a commission on each transaction. In some
instances, you can sell and buy directly through the company or government that
offers the investments for sale.
What is Security
Stocks and bonds are securities. Earlier, the term "Security" referred the certificates that companies issued to investors to
provide evidence of their holdings.
But nowadays almost all investment transactions
are recorded electronically instead of on paper. But the word "securities" is
still in use.
